Navigating Spaces
During our weekly meetups we went over navigating spaces. This is the understanding of how a games space can be designed and designed in a way that makes the players exploration fun, interactive and the overall flow to create a natural feel. Being a level designer understanding this will help improve my own level design. There are also some key areas within navigating spaces that go into more detail.
Wayfinding
Wayfinding is the understanding of how to use the environment and its surroundings to help guide the player to a specific point. This can be done is many ways on is orientation. By having certain objects of notoriety for example a large building can help a player know where they are and what they are near, another is signs that can simply tell the player where they are or guide them in a specific direction. Route decision is another method within wayfinding. Similar to orientation except its helping the player choose the best route which can be done by blocking off other paths and forcing them in a specific direction or by also using maps.
Desired paths
Desired paths are pathways that have formed over time as more and more people use them and these normally became the quickest routes that can be taken. Its is clear within my level what the desired path is from start to beginning.
Weekly Sprint
My task for this week was to create the white box for the castle map that I made making sure that it is clear enough as a layout for the player to navigate from start to finish. For this task I used probuilder within unity to create the Whitebox as it allows you create simple objects like cubes etc. and other tools within that allows me to create my 2d layout into a 3d space. For an example there is an inbuilt extrude tool that allows you to extend objects and helps in the creation of walls or beams. My other goal was to keep the Whitebox simple as it can be to leave room for any changes that may be changed within the next week or so. A problem that was happening throughout was GitHub as we where having many problems with committing within the Whitebox branch because of an error we where getting, that was stopping us from committing the changes to the GitHub though getting in touch with programmers to help fix it helped us move on with the task but we never found out what caused that issue in the first place and just need to keep an eye out if it happens again.
I feel that I have achieved the goals set for me this weeks sprint as I have provided the castle white box that was asked of me by the leads for this week. I also think my goal of keeping the white box simple was also met because of its simple and easily to understand layout and because of my use of pro builder makes it easily editable by others.
